This flat as a pancake event attracted four North Road members for some end of year running fun, in what has almost become a traditional event for some.
Richard Somerset showed strongly and completed the 10k distance in 42.22 claiming 77th place out of exactly 500 starters. Richard was also 15th in the male vets 40 (MV40) category out of 65 finishers. Dave Kiely had also rediscovered his running legs and achieved a time of 43.27, good enougth for 102nd place, and 21st in the MV40.
The main battle was further down the field between John McDowall and Brian Goodwin, in scenes reminiscent of the great Coe and Ovett battles of the eighties, a lengthy head-to-head tussle over the last 5k Brian won through in 137th place, in 44.44 (26th in MV40 catogry) with John an agonizing ten seconds further back (44.54), 141st place and 29th in MV40.

The wind howled, and the rain fell in biblical propotions, but that did not stop four hardy North Roaders competing in the Fairlands Valley Spartans 5K run series around the cycle tracks of Stevenage. Former North Roader Tony Bradford, now a converted runner, was a welcome sight as we arrived at HQ, as he had the misfortune to be on marshalling duties. Richard Somerset scurried round in a highly credible 20-45 coming 85th out of 246 starters. John McDowall lumbered round in 21-37 coming 110th, with his former running nemesis David Kiely finishing further back on 22-47 (135th) Steve Blackwell with the grand total of two training runs under his belt clocked 30-01 just missing his target of under 30.

John McDowall and Richard Somerset completed their first 10K run of the winter into the teeth of a 'Wuthering Heights' style gale. Richards posted 44.27 coming 87th out of 590 starters - good enough for 24th in his age group out of 123 runners. John posted a PB of 46.32, 136th place, and 35th in the same age grouping as Richard |
