Name Richard Somerset
Nickname (if any) Badger
Age 42
Years cycling 19
Joined club 1999
Where do you live Welwyn Garden City
Favourite rider and why Phillipe Gilbert, just love his instinctiveness and the fact he is willing to give it a go.
How would you describe your riding style Mercurial
Cycling Strengths Accounts
Cycling Weaknesses An unwillingness to specialise resulting in breathtaking mediocrity in all aspects of cycle sport
Favourite ride I used to really enjoy the last 20 miles of the Bournemouth training ride: Creech Hill, the technical descent to Corfe Castle, then the mega hard road to the ferry, then waving goodbye to your clubmates as they arrive later than you. Abroad my favourite is the Tilff-Bastogne-Tilff randonee (I always have a good day), at home the Dragon Ride 2009 was excellent
Best race performance (if any) 22nd in Divisional Champs in 1995, also beating Tony Bradford in a Herts Wheelers club 10, and winning five races in three weeks at Welwyn Track League in 2001 (B group I hasten to add)
Best day on a bike Etape du Tour 1999, finished in top 1000. Also had an amazing day once riding in Belgian Ardennes where flew up all the hills. One of those all too rare float days.
Worst day on a bike Etape du Tour 2005 closely followed by Etape du Tour 2001, both involved stopping to rest many times on the climbs, horrible. Closely followed by a 10 hour epic tour of Tenerife up Mount Teide in 1995.
Most embarrassing cycling moment Not much springs to mind but chain snapping after 30 seconds on Luton Reliability ride this year is quite embarrassing. Funnily enough I have never failed to unclip my pedals at traffic lights.
Best training tip Rest rest rest
Cycling food Tea and cake (from Emily's at Whitwell naturally)
Best/Worst Crash Welwyn Track League 1999, points race, tangled handlebars in finishing straight. Lots of blood requiring an ambulance and painful clean up at hospital, nothing broken luckily. I had also crashed five days before in Belgium when I fell off on a level crossing badly hurting my shoulder, so after Welwyn crash I couldn't sleep on either side for a week.
Dream bike Orbea with Campag Record
Favourite cycling saying It won't make you any faster, …..where is everybody?, ….car behind…
