View from the Roadside

The catering officer and the timekeeper were the first to arrive and almost the last to depart from the HQ at Eyeworth Village Hall, but whilst we were waiting for other arrivals the breeze sprang up to make for a hard afternoon for the riders, especially the final two miles to the finish. The riders were sent on their downhill way to Guilden Morden helped on by a push by the starting clerk, Andy Lancaster. Direction signs had been put on the course by Nick Harris. Peter Little, Ken Lovett and Paul Groves marshalled the riders through Wendy, Wimpole RAB and Wrestlingworth Xroads. Jim Parsons decided not to risk his front tyre which developed an ominous bulge on the starting line. Back to the XRoads to find that Tim Brown was 10 seconds up on Tony May followed by Adam Spector 2 minutes down on Tim with Simon Best and Rich Somerset now nearly 3 minutes adrift of the leader. Matt Crees and Jobe Usher were now well over 4 minutes in arrears with the rest of the field struggling into the wind.

After completing timekeeping duties it was time to return to the village hall for tea and   cakes, collect signs and marshal jackets, but most welcome to talk and while away a few moments with fellow North Roaders. Then it was time to wend our way home through Guilden Morden and Steeple Morden, halting en route to pick a few wild plums. The hedgerow was laden in previous years but the pickings were sparse this year due to the weather not being kind at blossom time – it has been unkind at most times this year as any keen cyclist (Graham) and gardener (Annabel) will readily let you know!
