SUCCESSFUL SEASON FOR SIMON BEST – HE TAKES THREE TROPHIES

North Road Cycling Club celebrated a successful season at the 123rd Annual Dinner and Prize Presentation.

It was a particularly successful season for Simon Best, who was presented with three trophies.
He collected the A. B. Smith Memorial Cup for the year’s fastest 10-mile time trial (22:14), the John Palmer Memorial Cup for the fastest 25 (57:12) and the W. A. Ellis Memorial Cup (25.960 mph). Simon also took a silver medal as runner-up in the Ken Davis Salver.

Ian Coles received the Track Championship Cup and the W. A. Palmer Hillclimb Cup (2:47). Also receiving two trophies was Tony May, who was presented with the A. J. Begbie 50 Miles Challenge Cup (2:00:34) and the A. Shillito BAR Cup (25.672 mph). Tony also received a bonze medal for third place in the Ken Davis Salver.

Father and Daughter Alan and Leigh Harvey went home with two trophies each. Alan took the Ken Davis Veteran’s 25 Miles Cup and the Kilham Roberts 25 Miles Cup while Leigh received the R. A. C. Risley Memorial Cup (26:20) and the Centenary Ladies’ 25 Miles Cup (1:01:14).

The Road Race Cup went to Tristan Emptage. David Candy won the Ken Davis Salver for the third year running. Warren Cobb received a bronze medal as the best improver. World Duathlon Champion David Vaughan took the Kilham Roberts 25 Miles Cup (1:00:41) and the A. J. Wilson Founders Cup went to Richard Roomans.

In the club awards, Tony Shoesmith rode from Land’s End to John O’Groats to take the R. F. Mynott Memorial Cup for long distance riding, and received the Sid Jenkinson Gazette Award for his written account of the ride.

The prizes were presented by North Road President Andrew Lancaster and the dinner took place at Homestead Court Hotel, Welwyn Garden City.
