As my result board duties would not commence to after the first few riders had finished, I had time to ride up to the start to point out the correct starting point to the timekeeper
after which there was time to ride down from the Wrestlingworth Crossroads to Guilden Morden. The strong breeze promised a hard ride for competitors and this turned out to be the case although it did not seem to bother the top riders. After a chat to the marshals at the first left turn it was a pleasant ride along to Shingay and the return to Steeple Morden where I had time to do a circuit of the village.
The club event was incorporated in the Memorial ‘25’. The rides of the day to my mind were done by 12 year old Joe Kiely just beating evens and by the winner Rhys Howells who was inside 54 minutes. Jobe Usher and Ian Turner led home the North Road riders but yet again I was off target with the handicapping – the symmetry of the handicap result was spoilt by Eric Paillet and Dave Candy, although it was good to see Dave back in competition.
The ideal is to have all the handicaps so calculated that all the riders finish with the same time – come on people let’s get it right next time!
It was all happening at the headquarters at Steeple Morden. Football coaching for the
youngsters from the village, a 25 mile time trial for young and old and then a cricket match
for Annabel and I to watch whilst we had our picnic lunch. Then a short drive home and a
sleep in the late afternoon sunshine plus newspapers and television wound up the day.
