Dixon kicks on
William the Conqueror, Napoleon, Charles Aznavour, Georges Pompidou, Edith Piaf, Joan of Arc, Pepe le Pew.... your boy took an 'ell of a beating...
Yes, the North Road's enfant formidable, everyone's favourite EU import Eric Paillet suffered a spectacular fall from grace at this week's race of truth. Citing feeble excuses like "working all day" and "25 mile commute both ways", Eric will surely return to his imperious best as the summer progresses if he can make it back from work in time - tip: pedal faster.
On a warm sunny evening with a moderate breeze, 'Devilish Dan' Tarry secured second place with a clever manoeuvre on the final hill, surprising a rider by catching him just as he was changing gear and causing his chain to come off. The committee will surely be keeping an eye out for any future misdemeanours.
In the ladies' competition, Nikki and Iva battled it out for supremacy with everyone's other favourite EU import taking the glory and third place. Andy Muir rode for the first time this year and returned a very respectable time.
But, in a sporting shock comparable to Leicester winning the league, Foinavon winning the Grand National, or plucky Spurs winning anything, aging cub reporter Chris Dixon somehow came out on top in possibly the slowest Brickendon 10 on record. Where was ultra-reliable Jim Moss? Where was flying youngster Nick Candy? Where was anyone? Who cares, this will go down in Dixon family history along with the story of when I beat local legend Jobe Usher by nearly a minute, the time Jobe stopped halfway round to fix someone's puncture.
Meanwhile, in the race for the coveted Ken Davis Silver Salver, the absolute pinnacle of amateur cycling endeavour, Jim's lead over ever-present Ivana is down to a single point! Counselling and sedatives will be made available for anyone finding the excitement too much for them.
Thanks to Ian Turner on the watches, Nick Harris for signage, with Graham and Debbie Potter signing up and Nikki Chandler providing tea and biscuits. I'm not sure if ultra-distance veteran Ray Thorn and young pup Pete Nunn were there for anything but the pub trip afterwards but it was good to see them anyway.
