Fibrax Wrexham ‘Horseshoe Pass’ Hill Climb, 11th October 2009

Following my plan to mainly just do the longer hill climbs in 2009 I entered the race up Horseshoe Pass from Llangollen as a friend of mine lives quite close by, although I’d never ridden the pass before.  The climb is 2.3 miles long and climbs about 230m, with an average gradient of about 6.5%.  Although a road sign says it reaches 20%, I think the steepest it gets is more like 15%, with the gradient easing for the final 500 metres.  The climb is very scenic and great for spectators as the horseshoe shape means that from the finish riders can be seen dotted out along the course almost to the start.

A quick look at the start sheet suggested that although there were 90 riders a reasonably high placing looked possible.  A stiff headwind interrupted my rhythm though, and at the top I was a little disappointed that I hadn’t ridden faster.  However a look at the results showed that everyone had felt the wind and my 11.32 was good enough for 10th place.  In a big field I was pleased to get a top 10.
