Hardriders 2008 Results and report

Sunday 24th March

Top cyclists from around the south-east took part in North Road CC’s Hardriders race. The weather was kind to the riders with no repeat of the floods, snow and ice which have greeted the field in recent years. There was one human hazard – road-works – however, which forced the event to be reduced to 18 miles, and forced a late change to the course.

The start was moved to Kentish Lane and cut out the two big climbs of Darnicle and Carbone.

Julian Ramsbottom of De Rosa RT found the course to his liking to win the Thistle Trophy in 42 minutes 55 seconds, some 71 seconds ahead of runner-up and last year’s winner Richard Prebble (GS Strada). Chris Birch (East Street Cycles.com) crossed the finish line in third in 44:13, just two seconds in front of Matthew Bottrill (De Rosa RT).

There was much local interest in the women’s race with 18-year-old Turnford School student Emma Trott (Team Halfords Bikehut) taking the first junior prize. She was 37th overall.

The team prize (best three) went to Wheelspincycles.com (Keith Murray, Scott Rose and Brett Harwood) with a time of 2:19:16.

Tony Stott, also of Wheel-spin-cycles.com, was first Veteran on standard, crossing the line in 48:29 (+29:51). He was followed by Bruce Robinson (Shaftesbury CC) 49:38 (+24:11) and Phil Young (Hertfordshire Wheelers) 52:43 (+22:46).

First North Roader past the time keeper was David Vaughan (47:46) for 16th position. Hot on his heels was 2007 Ken Davis Champion Dave Candy (48:30, 20th).

Other North Road finishers Lawrence Pidcock (49:39, 26th); Ian Coles (50:39, 33rd=); Tony May (51:10, 36th); Gary Cooper 52:16, 40th); Nicholas Latimer (52:33, 42nd); Tristan Emptage (52:54, 47th); Simon Best (53:06, 50th); Leigh Harvey (56:06, 66th). Just under 90 riders completed the course.
