With only a modest 1:03:17 currently for a 25, the Shaftesbury CC Middle Markers event on the E2 (A14/A11, Newmarket to Four Went Ways) is one of my few opportunities for a ride on a local ‘fast’ course. However, being exposed, the course is known adversely affected by the wind and for Saturday’s event it was very adverse!
With a block headwind and gusts of up to 45mph it was a real struggle to the turn which saw a number of riders give up and take the first opportunity to turn round. Persevering, my time to the turn was a less than earth shattering 40.15. The return was just as ludicrous, I probably didn’t drop below about 25mph even up the drags, spinning out at 38mph on occasion and was back at the finish 23 ½ minutes later.
Crazy to ride, probably!! But strangely satisfying on a day when about only half the field decided to start.
