I couldn’t resist riding this event as it starts just around the corner from my home which allowed for the luxury of a very leisurely turbo warm-up in my garden shed, followed by a quick expresso and a gentle spin to the start.

A very tough course, featuring climbs up Carbone, Berkhampstead Lane, Newgate Street Village and a final slog up Darnicle. A 3pm Saturday start was a sociable time for a time trial but added an extra challenge with very busy local traffic competing for road space on the twisty country lanes.

Perhaps the toughest part of the day was the ‘recovery’ ride/grovel back to Northaw Village Hall via Darnicle, Carbone and Vineyards hill.

All in all a great event.   

I finished in a time of 26:30 and in 10^th place. The winner, Gunther Zechmann set a new course record of 23:23.
