Four North Road members were on the start sheet for this year’s local classic early season sporting time trial around the Western Hertfordshire lanes, the Welwyn Hilly.
This Welwyn Wheelers event is now run on a revised 31 mile course which takes in one lap of the Whitwell circuit followed by an extended loop to Hitchin, taking in Offley Hill and returning through Whitwell and Kimpton before the final slog up Heath Hill and finish at Codicote.
This year’s event was run in reasonably challenging conditions, heavy overnight rain cleared but left greasy roads and standing water to test the riders on this technical course. With cool temperatures a gentle South Easterly breeze provided a brisk passage on the leg to Hitchin but confronted riders on the return leg along Lilley Bottom.
