North Road Hardriders Feb 2022

A shortened course again

With temporary traffic lights operating after roadworks overran, the course was shortened to 22 miles with riders finishing on the lower slopes of the Col du Essendon..

It was dry and sunny with a moderate breeze, the marshals were chirruping on the corners and all was well in the world apart from those b*$£@^d hills.

Young Alex Franks from VC de Londres in his first year as a junior produced a blistering ride to finish in 52:03, a minute and a half clear, and must surely be one to watch for the future. He was followed home by Josh Crow-Stuart (Arctic Aircon RT, pictured) and Matthew Clements (Kuwait Pro Cycling Team)

Elspeth Grace riding for Welwyn Wheelers again took the Women's first prize in 1:01:04 with Rachel Brown (CC London) second and Lucy Neatham (Team Watto) third.

With two riders in the top ten, Verulam Really Moving won the team prize.

Jamie Anderson led the North Roaders home in 1:01:42, with very creditable times from Chris Symonds, Chris Dixon and Abigail Coles. Dan Tarry succumbed to a virus (is there something going round?) the week before so wisely chose not to ride.

Thanks to all the organisers, helpers, marshals, timekeepers, caterers, photographers and riders, but especially to Neil Lewis who has put in a real shift, running this challenging event so brilliantly for a decade, and will be handing over to a new team for 2023.
