Hatfield Sports Village Sprint Triathlon - Sun 13th May 2012

Sun 08 Jul 2012

Despite the early start the transition area was already bustling by 05:30 at the Hatfield Sports Village for their May Sprint triathlon. North Road's original line-up for the event was halved with both Steve Blackwell and John McDowall withdrawing due to injury. This left Nick Ison and Bryan Holland to represent the club.

The first competitor jumped in the pool to start the race at 06:30.  At this point steam was still coming off the pool as the cold air swept in through the open door (left ajar to enable a quick exit outside to transition for competitors). Before long the pool had a string of swimmers completing their 16 lengths (400m) and making their way in to the first transition. This was followed by an unusually long run to the bike mount line (best managed barefoot, rather than in cycling shoes) and a relatively flat and fast 20km cycle with just a few roundabouts and speed bumps to watch out for. The cycle was, of course, followed by a repeat of the "longer than usual" run with bike into the second transition.   The triathlon was then completed with a 5km (4 lap) run around the sports village.

All in all a good course for an early season sprint triathlon, with a good atmosphere and a mix of competitor levels across the 198 finishers. The event was won by Glyn Williams (Born2Tri) who dipped under the 1 hour mark in 00:59:41.  Nick led the North Road CC contingent home finishing 25th at 1:10:14, with Bryan a little further back in 36th place at 01:14:06.
