East London Velo Thurs Evening 4 LVRC 4th June 2009

Another impressive turnout of North Road members ensured an exciting nights racing on the lower circuit at Hog Hill.  With the C/D catogry riders given a healthy head start it is always touch-and-go if the A/B vets can catch them; particularly so when attacks come thick and fast leading to some dis-organised if spirited racing.

Steve Taylor was more than holding his own and looked comfortable, until he became entangled with the E/F riders and lost the wheel of the main bunch.

Chris Glithero enjoyed the flatter conditions and was involved in the racing until just after the half way mark.

All the remaining North Roaders - John McDowall, Richard Somerset and Dave Kiely were heavily involved in attacks off the front of the main group.  The sudden appearence of the two laps to go board, without the traditional precursor of the 3,4 or 5 countdown, set up an interesting finale.

Dave lauched an audacious and well timed attack with half a lap to go, and quickly opened a twenty metre gap.  It looked possible that he may stay away as both John and Richard were at the front of the bunch holding up the inevitable bunch sprint.  Sadly Dave couldn't keep going and slowly imploded like an over-sugared meringue as the main bunch galloped by.  Richard sprinted well and came in about fourth with John and Dave approx ninth and tenth, although we (yet again) failed to catch an impressive group of C/D vets.
