SERRL Event 3, Hiddenborough, 3/4 cat - Sunday 1st April

Report by Ian Turner

Following an introduction to Road Racing several weeks ago, at the LVRC promoted Glendene Early Starter and suitably enthused I set about entering my first BC road race. Unfortunately the local ERRL Spring RR was full and so I turned my attention to the SERRL at Hildenborough. The event was open to 3/4/J/W. I turned up in North Road CC colours for the 09:30 start.

The course was nine laps of a 6 mile circuit through rural and undulating lanes in Western Kent. The fresh NE wind played it’s part. Rolling start behind course car and the race got off to a frantic start and didn’t seem to settle down, I managed to stay in the bunch, trying to move forward where possible on faster downhill sections. I felt strong throughout the race although didn’t participate in (in fact didn’t see) the breaks, which included one lone leader and a small chasing group. Unfortunately I was forced to retire on the 5th lap due to broken front forks – I limped back to race HQ and waited for the race to finish.

The lone leader (Julian Cann) lasted for 7 laps(I’m impressed!), and went on to finish 4th. James Dear(In Gear Quickvit Racing Team)  won the race.

I was pleased with my fitness, disappointed to retire for mechanical reasons and looking forward to my next road race.
