LVRC Ciclos Uno 'Hoggenberg' Classic, Hog Hill - Sunday 5th June 2011

The race was at Hog Hill on Sunday 5th June, it started at 11am and had 48 starters. The race was run over the an hour + 5 laps, with all but the last three laps on the lower circuit and the race finishing at the top of the hill.

There was a break of two that went after about quarter distance, they got about twenty seconds up on the bunch that appeared happy to let the two stay away and take the first prime. When the breakaway started to increase their advantage the bunch was quick to react and reduce the advantage to about 10 seconds at about two thirds distance.

With several attempts to bridge the gap the breakaway failed and was brought back, the second prime was a bunch sprint that I won. Several attempts were made to form another break. With seven laps to go a break of two formed and worked well to gain an advantage of 15 seconds, I bridged the gap to join the break and we were soon joined by a further six who all worked well together to put the break out of sight of the main bunch by the time the race started the full circuits and take on the hill.

Despite many attempts of the hill climbing specialists to break free of the breakaway, the break managed to stay together, with 800 meters to go, and with the bunch a long way behind, no one wanted to lead up the hill for the final time, the break slowed whilst tactics were played out, I was in the middle of the break able to watch events in front and behind, when the final dash for the line started. I waited for the final 125 meters and sprinted up the steep incline to win my first race in North Rd CC colours, beating Graham Galvin from east London Velo and Trevor Whitcock from Lee valley RC into second and third place respectively.
