LVRC Dunton - Sunday 3rd August

Sun 03 Aug 2008

The ever popular LVRC series returned to Dunton with a good turn-out of North Road members despite the club twenty-five the day before.  Regular rider’s John McDowall, Nick Harris, Del Evans and Steve James raced in the under sixties category while Geoff Oliver competed in the separate, but concurrently run, over sixties race.  Much welcome vocal support was provided by the Evans family at the side of the track.

With a grey sky and yet another week of strong winds it was in many ways familiar Dunton action.  Several early breaks were reeled back in, including one by that Dunton rarity, an organized pursuit.  Steve James feeling a little off the pace after his endeavors in the club twenty-five, struggled early in the piece and dropped out.  The winning group of nine rider’s did escape the clutches of the main bunch, who despite much chiding and attempts to organize, remained disinclined to chase and content to engage in a kind of mass ride around.

John McDowall attempted to close the gap with another rider, but had to sit up and wait for the main bunch after two laps away.  Del Evans after last week’s heroics was very active and looked strong, but on the hour mark he imploded like an over cooked soufflé and dropped out of contention.

The final sprint to the line ended in slight confusion as the over sixties group were caught up in the final stampede to the line.  John came in the top fifteen with a long final sprint with Nick hanging on at the back of the bunch.  Geoff more than held his own in the over sixties race and finished very credibly, considering his lack of racing experience, in the top ten.  The next Dunton will be in two weeks time on Sunday August the 24th
