Last year Trevor Burke won the Eagle Road Race and four North Roaders, Richard Somerset, Jonathan Appleby, Frank Rawlins and Mark Lawrence lined up eager to defend this year’s title.
After a steady two laps of a six lap race Jonathan and Mark managed to break away together on one of the small drags on the course. Their lead increased thanks partly to some impressive spoiling tactics by Richard (chasing down the breaks and sitting on) but unfortunately as so often happens in third cat races their break was caught after nearly a lap away.
No other breaks were successful until the last lap when Mark again attacked and got a gap with another rider. This time both Richard and Jonathan sat behind the  pursuers in an attempt to disrupt the chase. This worked for a while, but again Mark’s break was caught and with two miles to go a bunch sprint was inevitable.
In the ensuing skirmish and despite being in two breaks during the race new North Road star Mark Lawrence displayed tremendous strength and came fourth in the sprint. Jonathan also rode very well and finished just behind Mark in fifth.
Richard and Frank arrived in the front group in 16th and 17th place respectively.
Several comments were made after the race by other clubs that the North Road displayed great team tactics.
