North Road ERRL Road Race - Whitwell circuit, 125km, E/1/2/3 cat - Sunday 15th July

It wasn’t quite as arduous as a stage of the Tour de France, but North Road CC’s 125 kilometre Summer Road Race proved almost as difficult for the host club’s representatives.
The toughest event on the Hertfordshire cycling calendar saw 50 elite riders take on eight laps of a grueling circuit covering Whitwell, Codicote, Langley and the climb into St. Paul Walden.
Although the heavy rain forecast never materialised, the course still proved too tough for Trevor Burke, Ian Coles or Mark Lawrence to force their way into contention.
Trevor and Ian were dropped by the leaders in the early stages and finished in the main bunch, while Mark was far adrift he ended up retiring from the race.
The first early pace was sustained and the field quickly split into four groups with favourite Andy Lyons (Heron Cyclesport RT) winning the first prime.
Philip Hetzel (Ipswich BC) displayed his sprinting prowess to take the second prime, but Lyons returned to the head of the field when it mattered most to take victory in 3:05:56 ahead of team mate Dean Shannon.
