The following week was still windy, but dry. Again, myself, John and Jon Munns were present. The better weather resulted in a much bigger field with nearly 60 riders in the 3/4 race. An early group of four rode clear, but the pace was too fierce for them all, and soon it was just two away. The rest of us didn’t try as hard we should have done and the effort level was less than needed to bring them back. We all rode towards a bunch sprint for the rest of the places and, in preparation, I hid in the wheels and tried to save energy. I kept in the front 20 places and then, with two laps to go, moved up in to the top 10 for the sprint. I was well positioned at 250 metres from the line, but didn’t have the kick to make an appreciable change of pace. I was convincingly outsprinted and finished out of the points in 16th place.
