ELV Summer Series Event 6 - Thursday 14th June 2012

It was another windy night with light showers. This time we had a tailwind for the last 600 metres of the circuit and hence a headwind down the hill. Ex NRCC member, Tristan Emptage and Frank Rawlins lined up with about 35 others. They had discussed a plan of sitting at the back and sheltering from the wind and this turned out to be a sound strategy. For most of the race attacks were launched on the hill and caught half a lap later as the wind took the energy out of the riders’ legs. I didn’t feel too lively either and so was happy to let others tire themselves. With five laps to go a group of six managed to get 100 metres on the field and looked like staying away and so Frank made a big effort to get across using the wind to help him gain ground on them. He made contact and they kept the lead for a lap, but were closed down with three to go. I then rested for the finale and on the approach to the bell Frank made sure to regain the front of the bunch. He stayed in the first few places for the most of the lap and as they went round the sweeping left-hander with 400 metres to go Frank kicked for the line. Frank managed to stay strong and got fifth place.
