Glendene Road Race (Hog Hill) - Mon 13th April 09

Tue 14 Apr 2009

Report from Tristan Emptage

After a disappointing Race at Hog Hill on Saturday Jon Appleby and I decided that we'd definitely not go for any early attacks and repeat the same mistakes, and that this time we'd keep our powder dry.....

Cue today's race at a wet Hog Hill.  As soon as the flag was raised the eventual winner Tommy from East London Velo attacked, and that, was the first place sorted.  Jon and I however had our own game plan, which we kind of kept too for about the first 5 laps, Jon going with a break of 12 which quickly opened up a sizeable gap. It was after about three laps of watching the race go up the road I decided to bridge the gap which a guy from Maldon Road Club...three laps later we were sat on the back of Jon's group with the lone rider still some 30 seconds up the road on his own.

With our group of 14 now a full minute in front of the main bunch one attack followed another each and every time we hit the Hill but with the last lap looming and two riders going down in the slippery conditions a lone rider clipped of the front and looked like staying away to claim 2nd spot.

However in some amazing selfless riding Jon pulled the rider back, sacrificing his own chance to give me the lead out in the final sprint to claim 5th place.

All in all another great race at the Hog Hill circuit, a terrific lone win by the overall winner and some fantastic team work by Jon
